Another restless night of missed sleep.
Up and down...
Tossing and turning...
It happens. But now it's happening all too often for your liking.
The physical and emotional signs are starting to show up now too. You've noticed dark circles and bags are beginning to show up under your eyes. The person looking back at you in the mirror looks noticeably older and... where did those extra pounds come from?
You catch yourself nodding off at work or running to the coffee machine for the... who-knows-how-many... cup of coffee for the day.
You're increasingly on a shorter fuse, snapping at your spouse, your partner or even your kids for just being.
You can remember reading that the minimum hours of quality sleep you need are around 6-7 on the low end. Let's not even talk about the true optimal amount that most people need to be high functioning and lead truly fulfilled lives.
Most nights it just feels like you are struggling to get maybe 4 hours, and those are not what you'd call "quality sleep".
Hey, I get it, when you were 18 you could pull an all-nighter without much thought... heck maybe even a couple of back-to-back in college and you wouldn't have a problem recovering from it. But now that you're a few years older those missed hours of sleep aren't treating you quite as well...
And guess what?
Your energy levels aren't the only thing that's suffering.
You could very well be damaging your overall health in the process.
Research shows that nearly 90%, yes you read that right 90%, of people with trouble falling and staying asleep are at a greater risk of one of these conditions:
- heart disease
- heart attack
- stroke
- high blood pressure
- diabetes
AND even if you take those diseases out your mind for a second lack of sleep also causes lowered levels of testosterone. The hormone that exists naturally in both men and women and without it... well let's just say there are more things missing in the bedroom than just sleep!!
But don't beat yourself up... It's not your fault...
We are living in a society that's told you there "aren't enough hours in the day" and at the same time preaching that you can and need to do more to be a "success".
The bottom line is that you're being pulled in two directions... your fulfillment at the expense of your health.
Your body is resilient and adaptable and it's built to do one thing if nothing else, and that's to survive. But to do that it needs 3 things, food, water and sleep.
Take any one of those three away and you're asking for serious trouble.
You know the systems:
Go without food for a while, you get hungry and you eat.
No water for a while, you get thirsty and you drink.
No sleep for a while, you you get tired and you... drink coffee or other caffeine loaded beverage... which actually further disrupts the sleep that you do get. :0(
So your body will try to keep up with your lack of quality sleep by "borrowing" from other areas so that you can keep going. Thus you get diseases. First it may be the shorter fuse and snappy attitude. Then it's colds and feeling run down that then turns into elevated blood markers and then finally like a hammer after several years of burning the candle at both ends you now have something to truly worry about.
As we age our body's resilience starts to fade, so those things you used to do
So why is it so hard to get even a decent night of uninterrupted rest?
Here's the worst part. You may not even know it until it is too late!
are constantly bombarded with new information, updates and interruptions. Social Media pings, email dings and any other number distractions that have come to be a normal part of our lives now... and it's only getting worse! Even the apps designed to help us relax send notifications to break our concentration and pull our focus in their direction.
If you've ever had so many different things to do that you don't know where to begin or how to juggle the multitude of tasks that you end up doing nothing or been in full-on work mode, head-down making serious progress on an important project only to have someone walk up to you and interrupt with an emergency then you've been here.
After only a couple of minutes away from whatever it is we are working on, the dreaded "now what was I doing again".
You struggle to recover your focus and concentration now you want to be productive so you turn to your email or a message or alert on your phone and the next thing you know an hour has passed and you're still no closer to resetting your focus and getting back to what you were working on.
You feel like you need blinders to put you back on track.
Thoughts of falling behind your peers begin to creep in and you begin to self-diagnose with ADHD.
Listen, I get it. The monkey mind is not an uncommon phenomenon.
It was only a few short years ago that you could "multitask" with the best of them and be fully focused and concentrating on the task at hand while seemingly juggling 10 other tasks, projects and to-do's.
Or at least so you thought.
Most people think that to get more focus you need so-called "smart drugs", stimulants or maybe other more serious pharmaceuticals to help get back to your old way of being able to focus on many things at once. That bright shining rock-star in the office, home and school.
Others still just write this off to "getting older".
It feels like body is not properly rested it can lead to poor performance on the job, lack of focus and irritability at home with loved ones after just a couple of lost hours of sleep... and that's just in the short term. Missing sleep on a chronic basis can lead to even worse health consequences in the long term.
